Vadose Zone Journal is a unique publication outlet for interdisciplinary research and assessment of the vadose zone, the portion of the Critical Zone that comprises the Earth’s critical living surface down to groundwater. It is a peer-reviewed, international journal publishing reviews, original research, and special sections across a wide range of disciplines. Vadose Zone Journal reports fundamental and applied research from disciplinary and multidisciplinary investigations, including assessment and policy analyses, of the mostly unsaturated zone between the soil surface and the groundwater table. The goal is to disseminate information to facilitate science-based decision-making and sustainable management of the vadose zone. Examples of topic areas suitable for VZJ are variably saturated fluid flow, heat and solute transport in granular and fractured media, flow processes in the capillary fringe at or near the water table, water table management, regional and global climate change impacts on the vadose zone, carbon sequestration, design and performance of waste disposal facilities, long-term stewardship of contaminated sites in the vadose zone, biogeochemical transformation processes, microbial processes in shallow and deep formations, bioremediation, and the fate and transport of radionuclides, inorganic and organic chemicals, colloids, viruses, and microorganisms. Articles in VZJ also address yet-to-be-resolved issues, such as how to quantify heterogeneity of subsurface processes and properties, and how to couple physical, chemical, and biological processes across a range of spatial scales from the molecular to the global.

This journal publishes a small number of articles and is a very good journal. Although the impact factor is not high, the reputation in the industry is indeed very good, and this journal is generally recognized by the best experts. During the submission process, besides the two reviewers, the associate editor also put forward a lot of comments requiring for revisions. Due to so many comments to address, the revision was not completed within one month, so we applied to the associate editor for an extension, and the revision was submitted in almost two months. It was accepted soon after revised submission.

The annual article volume of this journal is not very large. It focuses on the calculation of the hydrological model of the unsaturated seepage zone (Vadose Zone). The direction is so unpopular that IF is not quite high (the academic level of a journal can’t be judged by IF only). It is an excellent SCI journal, and there are not many researchers who can publish articles on it.

Although the impact factor is not high, but the five reviewers, the editor is quite strict.

This is a journal of the American Soil Society and was founded in 2004. Most of the editorial board members are in institutions affiliated with the US Department of Agriculture or in US universities or national laboratories. The journal publishes 4 issues every year, and issues has about 20-30 articles, focusing on soil hydrology and the migration of solutes (colloids) in the vadose zone. Although the impact factor is not high, ranking seventh in soil science, but it is a well recognized journal in the US. The quality of the articles is high, the models published are often difficult to understand. Few articles from researchers in China so far. Because articles related to soil hydrology are not suitable for SSSAJ, SSSAJ founded this journal for articles on soil hydrology, especially those related to the unsaturated zone.
