Vacuum is an international rapid publications journal with a focus on short communication. All papers are peer-reviewed, with the review process for short communication geared towards very fast turnaround times. The journal also published full research papers, thematic issues and selected papers from leading conferences.

A report in Vacuum should represent a major advance in an area that involves a controlled environment at pressures of one atmosphere or below.

The scope of the journal includes:
1. Vacuum; original developments in vacuum pumping and instrumentation, vacuum measurement, vacuum gas dynamics, gas-surface interactions, surface treatment for UHV applications and low outgassing, vacuum melting, sintering, and vacuum metrology. Technology and solutions for large-scale facilities (e.g., particle accelerators and fusion devices). New instrumentation ( e.g., detectors and electron microscopes).
2. Plasma science; advances in PVD, CVD, plasma-assisted CVD, ion sources, deposition processes and analysis.
3. Surface science; surface engineering, surface chemistry, surface analysis, crystal growth, ion-surface interactions and etching, nanometer-scale processing, surface modification.
4. Materials science; novel functional or structural materials. Metals, ceramics, and polymers. Experiments, simulations, and modelling for understanding structure-property relationships. Thin films and coatings. Nanostructures and ion implantation.

The latest real-time impact factor is out, showing a decrease instead of an increase. The Chinese Academy of Sciences is not very friendly to journals with large numbers of submissions from Chinese nationals but not produced domestically. Be cautious of the decline zone

The editorial process was quite fast, as the submission was processed the day after, and it remained under review thereafter. However, it was confusing that the editor assigned five reviewers, but fortunately their questions were not too difficult. After submitting a reply, we waited another month and a half before finally receiving acceptance. Overall, the process was relatively smooth, although it was surprising to encounter five reviewers for a second-tier publication

Recommendation reasons: 1. The processing speed is very fast. If approved, it will be sent for review within three days. If not, it will be rejected within one or two days, saving your time. 2. The reviewers are generally very friendly and will not easily reject your article. They provide many revision suggestions, which greatly improve the quality of the article after overall revisions. Most importantly, they usually select a recommended reviewer from your list. If you have connections with well-known resources, it will be even better. 3. The editor is an expert in XPS and TEM. If your article involves these areas, be sure to analyze them carefully. 4. Please respond uniformly to the editor's handling requests for XPS: Usually, when processing XPS, it is calibrated with C1S, with a default C1S binding energy of 284.8 eV. However, in an article published by the editor, it is suggested that the C1S binding energy may vary with different measurement times and materials, and cannot simply use 284.8 eV. You should combine the work function of each measurement; if the work function cannot be measured, then cite a literature that has measured it. First of all, the review speed is very fast. If it is not suitable, it will be rejected the next day without any dragging. If it is suitable, it will be under review in less than 3 days, so it is a rare good journal. Secondly, the review comments are very objective, but not difficult, and after the revision, your paper will be significantly improved in quality. The editor-in-chief pays particular attention to characterization methods such as XPS, SEM, and XRD, but not much else. Moreover, they are relatively friendly to Chinese authors. Currently, the top three institutions for submission in China are Harbin Institute of Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Central South University. The reviewers in China mainly come from these three institutions, so it can be said that this journal is Chinese-friendly. Finally, many experts believe that this journal does not require much innovation, but I disagree. If you don't believe it, you can try submitting in March to May after the new year. The journal will reject you in minutes. Since 2022, this journal has high requirements for metals and composite materials. If you don't have excellent ball-rod high resolution or atomic probe, there is no need to submit because you will be rejected in minutes. Lastly, I must mention that the impact factor of this journal will definitely increase, so it is advisable to invest early. I cannot disclose the reasons, but you understand

The editor is an expert in XPS and TEM, suggesting that everyone revise these two parts before submitting. I'm too obsessed with this. The two revisions are the same.
Initial draft in September, major revisions one month later, minor revisions another month later, major revisions again the next day, minor revisions again in half a month, and accepted in three days.
The editor is diligent and responsible, with incredibly fast speed.

The first SCI publication in my life, although the process was very difficult, it was accepted. I am thankful to my advisor and the editor, throwing flowers.
As everyone said, there are many requirements for XPS and TEM, but the reference articles and theories provided by the editor were very helpful for me. Submitted on July 11, 2023 and accepted on October 4. The editor asked for one revision before submission and one after submission.
Most importantly!!! After the submission, the review comments were simple, and after perfect responses, the paper was rejected two days later. It felt like an editor's mistake, so I immediately wrote an appeal letter. As expected, the paper was returned to the review process, and then it was accepted. I would like to thank Professor LG Hultman, the speed was really fast, basically within his hands for less than three days
