From the word of mouth, the journal seems to be okay, but domestically PLos doesn't seem to be very popular, and its impact factor is not very high. At first, I was a bit hesitant to submit my manuscript, thinking it was a lower tier journal with a relatively low impact factor. However, based on the review comments, the reviewers were quite knowledgeable. I went through two rounds of review, with the first round taking three months to receive feedback from two reviewers with a dozen or so comments, which didn't seem like a lot. The manuscript was accepted after the second round of review. Before submitting to this journal, I had experienced multiple rounds of submissions to other journals (around the level of PNAS), which left me mentally exhausted. My supervisor suggested submitting to this journal, and I guess I was lucky.

After finishing writing the paper, full of confidence, I directly submitted it to Chem Sci and was rejected. My supervisor suggested JMB and Plos CB, so I submitted to JMB and was rejected again. In July, I started submitting to Plos CB, and in early August, the first review came back with a major revision required, with very sharp criticisms from both reviewers. It took almost two months to revise and resubmit with additional calculations and responses. After the second review, another major revision was requested, with fewer issues this time but still requiring additional calculations. The revised paper was resubmitted in the 20th. After the third review, one reviewer recommended acceptance while the other had a few remaining issues, so the editor asked for minor revisions. After the revisions were made, it took around 10 days to receive the acceptance. The reviewers were very quick in their assessments from the system, but the editor was relatively slower, with each review taking about a month.

This is a better biology journal (it is said to be ranked second in computational biology journals in 2012). I had to be sure to find someone to edit the English writing for my paper before I submitted my manuscript. In terms of the submission cycle: The first step was the editorial invitation and the preliminary examination (about 10 days); then the external review, three reviewers participated (took about 1 month); according to the comments of the reviewers, usually a deadline is given; the second review portion was faster (about ten days); then the editorial decision phase (about 10 days); finally, you will be notified of the payment and official publication time…In addition, the journal requires contributors to typeset their own figures etc., which can be a bit of work.
