Food and Chemical Toxicology (FCT), an internationally renowned journal, that publishes original research articles and reviews on toxic effects, in animals and humans, of natural or synthetic chemicals occurring in the human environment with particular emphasis on food, drugs, and chemicals, including agricultural and industrial safety, and consumer product safety. Areas such as safety evaluation of novel foods and ingredients, biotechnologically-derived products, and nanomaterials are included in the scope of the journal. FCT also encourages submission of papers on inter-relationships between nutrition and toxicology and on in vitro techniques, particularly those fostering the 3 Rs.

The principal aim of the journal is to publish high impact, scholarly work and to serve as a multidisciplinary forum for research in toxicology. Papers submitted will be judged on the basis of scientific originality and contribution to the field, quality and subject matter. Studies should address at least one of the following:

-Adverse physiological/biochemical, or pathological changes induced by specific defined substances
-New techniques for assessing potential toxicity, including molecular biology
-Mechanisms underlying toxic phenomena
-Toxicological examinations of specific chemicals or consumer products, both those showing adverse effects and those demonstrating safety, that meet current standards of scientific acceptability.

Authors must clearly and briefly identify what novel toxic effect (s) or toxic mechanism (s) of the chemical are being reported and what their significance is in the abstract. Furthermore, sufficient doses should be included in order to provide information on NOAEL/LOAEL values.

Food and Chemical Toxicology, a few years ago, the former editor-in-chief Domingo resigned angrily, followed by a large number of associate editors and editorial board members. Furthermore, FCT has become the journal of the ZG Toxicology Society, with over 50% of articles authored by ZG authors each year. As a result, it has dropped from being a top-tier journal to a third-tier one, feeling like it has been manipulated by the Chinese. It used to be the top journal in toxicology, ranked first globally, but now it is in such a sorry state. Who is to blame? Is it the profit-driven publishing house, or something else?

When submitting manuscripts to a selected journal, initially in the top tier for review, but then dropped to the non-top tier after submission, I never expected this to happen!!! The review process is quite lengthy.

The most interesting thing is that the first author is an international doctoral student whose native language is English (from Zimbabwe). Therefore, I didn't make major changes to the initial draft as long as it was understandable. I thought the language was a bit verbose, but I didn't make significant changes to the wording. However, during the first round of review, an expert pointed out hundreds of grammar, typing, and fluency errors, suggesting that we seek professional translation services to improve the language. Our team, relying on my writing skills in English, which I believe are not inferior to native speakers, has never sought professional English editing before, and this time was no exception. After revising our scientific questions and responses, I critically reviewed the entire text with a strict spirit, and some paragraphs were completely transformed. After the revisions, the second-round expert said there was a significant improvement, and the editor did not mention any language issues again.

The translation of the text into English is as follows: 

Initially, it started with editing for revision, and then submitted to the editor for review. After three days, it went into the "under review" stage. However, after 1.5 months, it was directly rejected. I didn't understand why the experts' feedback only suggested minor revisions. Then, the editor recommended a toxicology-related journal that was not an SCI (Science Citation Index) journal. After rejecting the transfer, it was directly rejected. If it didn't meet the criteria from the beginning, why bother with peer review?

Posted on November 9th of the 22nd year, reviewed by the editor around November 11th or 12th, under review within a week, received major revisions comments on December 4th, revised and resubmitted on the 21st, accepted on the 27th. The editor and reviewers were very efficient, providing valuable suggestions. This journal is highly recommended.
